Global Trends of Top 100 Most Influential Articles in Perianal Fistula Research From 2003 to 2023

Perianal fistula seriously affects people's quality of life. This study aims to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the 100 most-cited articles on the Web of Science that have made significant contributions to evidence-based medical practice in the past 20 years. Cooperation network, co-citation, and keyword co-occurrence analyses were conducted. Annual publication trends, cooperation relationships among authors, institutions, and countries, co-cited journals, and keywords were the main outcomes. We also combine VosViewer, Citespace, Microsoft Excel, and Tableau tools to present a piece of better visual information. A total of 4,815 articles were retrieved, from which we included the 100 most-cited articles in this bibliometric. The number of articles published in this field is on a steady upward trend, and a large number of articles on perianal fistula therapy have appeared. The authors, institutions, and countries worked closely together in this field. The United States and Canada have the largest number of published articles and the closest cooperation relationship. The journal with the most published articles in this field is Disease of The Colon Rectum(n=39), and Gastroenterology is the journal with the highest impact factor in this area (IF=33.883). Metronidazole therapy, adhesive, long-term, endorectal advancement flap, and fibrin glue, etc. are recent hot keywords, and closure had the highest burst strength. Further prospective studies are needed in this field.
