Description

Janus, the Roman god of creation, has two different faces, one facing the past and one facing the future, which means that at the same time, the two faces can have different effects.Metastructure is a kind of artificially constructed layered dielectric structure, having the ability to control the frequency, amplitude, polarization and phase of electromagnetic waves, which is a physical property that does not exist in natural medium. The researchers found that a metastructure constructed by a specific design, such as an asymmetric arrangement of different dielectrics, in which electromagnetic waves traveling in opposite directions exhibit different electromagnetic properties. Inspired by Roman mythology, scientists refer to this phenomenon as the Janus property of metastructure. The Janus metastructure adds the propagation direction dimension to control the electromagnetic waves, which greatly expands the research and application field of metastructure.
