John’s first degree was engineering at Cambridge University. He worked at Rolls-Royce plc on compressors and fans. He left in 2000 for an MSc in renewable energy at Loughborough University. John stayed there as a post-doctoral researcher and worked on many projects in energy storage, flexible demand, and the integration of renewable energy into electricity systems. John has also worked at consultancies and secondments in hydrogen and other low carbon technology, including at De Montfort University, where he partnered with Dr Gammon and Dr Rahil to conduct the nickel-iron battolyser research.
