This study examines households’ sanitation practices in Kosofe Local Government Area; examine the background attributes of households in Kosofe LGA, area with a view of suggesting policies that will enhance households’ sanitation practices in Kosofe Local Government Area, Lagos, Nigeria. Primary and secondary sources of data were used for this study.
The primary data were obtained through the administration of one hundred and seventy-two (172) copies of questionnaire to the respondents in the study area. The study covers the whole households in Kosofe LGA. Thus, the study area was clustered based Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) and political wards in each LCDA in the local government area. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentage distribution and inferential statistics. The study revealed that significant proportion of respondents’ lacked basic sanitation facilities in their households, 67.9% lack access to water within their households, 23.8% and 44% of the households depend on unprotected dug well and water vendor (Aboki) as sources of water for their households, 23.2% lack access to kitchen space, 39.9% had poor drainage. Therefore, the study concludes that sanitation regulations and law enforcement play a crucial role in ensuring good hygienic and sanitary condition, hence, the study recommends the needs to implement all existing sanitation regulations and laws, provision of sanitation facilities, the introduction of health and hygiene behaviour among households’ by re-educating and public campaign, capacity development and improvement in service delivery.
