Smoking is a preventable and treatable cause of death and one of the main public health problems in the world. The World Health Organization states that smoking should be considered a pandemic with five million deaths a year attributed to tobacco consumption. The initiation of smoking in children and adolescents is associated with social influences from friends, parents and family members who smoke. Young people from families with low socioeconomic status and those who live with separated parents are at high risk of becoming smokers. Smoking in adolescence is particularly worrying because so far, there are no studies that indicate that first-line pharmacological options such as nicotine replacement therapy, bupropion and varenicline can be safely administered in this population and the effectiveness of the behavioral approach is not established.
