Description

The Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) program in Zamboanga City, highlighting how social welfare interventions address client needs beyond immediate financial assistance. Drawing on Psychosocial Theory, which emphasizes the dynamic interaction between individual psychological functioning and the social environment, the research examines how a combination of support mechanisms fosters resilience, adaptive coping, and stability within households. Using a mixed-methods design, the study collected quantitative data on financial aid distribution, utilization, and beneficiary satisfaction, alongside qualitative insights obtained through in-depth interviews with both beneficiaries and social workers. The findings suggest that while financial assistance provides essential short-term relief, the program’s broader interventions significantly contribute to long-term well-being. These include psychosocial support, referral to health services, participation in livelihood and skills-building programs, and ongoing follow-up counseling. Beneficiaries consistently reported lower stress levels, improved coping strategies, stronger family cohesion, and greater involvement in community activities. Such outcomes underline the multidimensional nature of program impacts and demonstrate that effective social welfare extends beyond economic relief to include social and emotional dimensions. The study also highlights the pivotal role of social workers, who facilitate access to community resources, provide counseling, and monitor follow-up support. Their engagement is critical in promoting resilience and adaptive functioning not only at the individual level but across the household. By combining economic, social, and psychosocial interventions, the AICS program demonstrates a model for holistic social welfare practice that can better respond to the complex and evolving needs of vulnerable populations. These findings suggest that the AICS program can be further strengthened through a holistic, psychosocial framework, ensuring that assistance does not merely address immediate crises but also supports ongoing client's adaptation.
