Emotional Intelligence Enhancement Program and Its Effect on the Suicidal Ideation Among Attempted Suicide Adolescents

Emotional intelligence had a great impact on mental health. The present study aimed at evaluating the effect of the emotional intelligence enhancement program on suicidal ideation among attempted suicide adolescents. Quasi- experimental research design "pre-post test" was used. Convenient sample consisted of 36 suicidal attempter adolescents was recruited from Poison Control Center, Cairo University. Data were collected through using four tools, namely the sociodemographic sheet, Beck Depression Inventory BDI-II, Barchard emotional intelligence scale, Beck Suicidal Ideation Scale. Results revealed that the family problems were the most prominent stressful life events Moreover; half of participants had previous suicidal attempts. There was a positive correlation between depression and suicidal ideation, while no significant correlation between emotional intelligence and either suicide ideation or depression. In conclusion, the emotional intelligence enhancement program was particularly effective in improving depression, suicidal ideation and total score of emotional intelligence. Therefore, it was recommended that an emotional intelligence enhancement program should be implemented as a preventive measure at secondary schools, screening for measuring the emotional intelligence of students should be conducted, counseling centers for adolescents and their parents should be established in all schools.
