Economo and Horn - Gyral form, dimensions and cytoarchitectonics of the supratemporal surface

Description
This is a translation of Constantin von Economo and Ludwig Horn: Über Windungsrelief, Masse und Rindenarchitektonik der Supratemporalfläche, ihre individuellen und ihre Seitenunterschiede. Z. ges. Neurol. Psychiat. 130:678-757 (1930). Although first published almost a century ago (1930), the original article still contains the most detailed study to date of the gyral topography and the cytoarchitectonics of the human supratemporal surface, i.e. the auditory and speech perception areas, with special emphasis on individual variations and on hemispheric asymmetries. The careful reader might also infer correlations between the “completely granulated” subareas and the regions of the primary auditory cortex for human speech frequencies, as well as correlations between the degree of granulation and the density of myelinated fibers. These can give even the modern (2023) reader insights into cortical development and functional capacities.
