Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), previously known as multiple personality disorder, this is a complicated psychological condition, which is characterized by the existence of two or more distinct identity states or alters within a single individual. These alternate states often evolve in response to chronic trauma during early development and serve clear psychological functions, consisting of protection, emotional regulation, and aggression. This paper investigates how protective and psychopathic alters impact the host’s ability to adapt to past traumatic experiences and foresee future threats. Based on clinical findings and theoretical frameworks, the study explores how such alters surface as survival-driven traits that may appear dysfunctional yet serve cohesive purposes. Psychoanalytic perspectives, from Sigmund Freud’s structural model of the psyche, the humanistic theory from Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the existential psychology from Viktor Frankl’s meaning making in suffering, the theory of the self from Carl Rogers’ self-congruence and unconditional positive regard, and the concept of shadow and individuation from Carl Jung, are engaged to interpret the intrapsychic thinking fundamental alter functions. By integrating trauma theory, clinical case studies, and foundational psychological models, this paper provides an interdisciplinary analysis of the healthy and unhealthy roles played by alters in DID, offering insights into the disorder’s intricate internal dynamic and therapeutic consequences.
