With the same methodologies, standards, and quality requirements of venerating Joan of Arc as a French Catholic martyr and a saint, this book venerates Chen Zi-Ang (courtesy name Bo-Yu, 659–700 CE) as a Chinese hero and a universal martyr. In the Daoist and folk religions, Chen has already been venerated as the Holy Land Patron of Shehong and the Shu (Sichuan Han Chinese regions and Chongqing) area. His ongoing life’s mission was, as a poet, author, and scholar, to establish a tranquil and cleansed world of great peace under Heaven with the Confucianist erudition, the Daoist religion, and the cultural-spiritual Chinese archetype of the warrior as the crucial resources. While carrying out this mission, Chen refused all systems of earthbound power and wealth from kidnapping his soul, which he dedicated to this mission. The career themes, activities benefiting others, positive qualities, and life significance of Chen, a pure and delicate young man webbed in illness and infirmities, have formed a permanent resplendent symbol of native Chinese intellectual greatness, heroism, and martyrdom. Before a very mediocre and highly atrocious leader committing massive regressions as well as a perception of China as a barbaric enemy, Chen deserves the veneration of those who revere and love cultural-spiritual China.
