Inter-ethnic relations have been a continuous source of tensions and conflicts in the Western Balkan region and their roots go back deep into history. Tensions among different ethnicities living in the region have especially increased after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in the late 19th century. This period marks the beginning of the national awakening for the people in the Balkans during which they engaged on national territorial expansion at the expense of the contracting Ottoman Empire. These inter-ethnic grievances were grossly precipitated by the violent dissolution of Former Yugoslavia that left a legacy of deep mistrust and animosity between majority and minority ethnicities in the new states that emerged out of it. Having in mind the importance of these relations for the stability of the region, the author engaged into an eight years research of inter-ethnic relations in the seven countries of the region.
