Description
Adult and Continuing Education in Kenya refers to lifelong learning opportunities designed for adults and out-of-school youth who missed out formal education. It plays a strategic role in promoting literacy, socio-economic empowerment, and national development by equipping learners with basic education, practical skills, and competencies relevant for the contemporary world. ACE, therefore, aims at eradicating illiteracy and promote lifelong learning across all regions of Kenya. This book dealt with what encompass ACE. Basic literacy and Post-Literacy & Continuing Education were crucial for skills and lifelong learning. Resources were identified as being key in promotion of ACE. With adequate infrastructure, human resource and learning materials, learners can attend community-based Adult Learning centers with flexible purpose of their schedules. Hence, adults are empowered socially and economically, improving self-confidence and participation in civic life. Eventually, adults would contribute to national goals, including higher literacy rates and inclusive economic development under Kenya Vision 2030. The study also surveyed trends and reforms made by Kenya’s government in modernizing adult education to align it with the Competency-Based Education (CBE) approach and 21st-century skills such as digital literacy and problem solving. The initiatives include curriculum revision, expanding instructor numbers, and upgrading learning centers nationwide. Despite this, there are challenges facing ACE. Limited funding and facilities, especially in rural areas has affected promotion of ACE. Besides, there is a shortage of trained adult education instructors and learning materials. Proposals have been made on the directions to be taken in order to promote ACE. To sum up, adult and continuing education in Kenya is a vital, evolving part of the education system that fosters inclusion, economic participation, and personal growth for adults beyond the traditional school system.
