This essay argues that Plotinus’s aesthetics is not ultimately a philosophy of beautiful objects but a philosophy of transformation. Beginning with the sensible experience of beauty, it follows the soul’s progressive movement from the beautiful body to the beautiful soul, from intelligible form to Intellect, and finally toward the Good, beyond every determinate form. Beauty is therefore neither a property nor a possession: it is an operation, a relation, and above all a conversion of the gaze. The beautiful object attracts precisely because it cannot contain the reality it reveals. Through contemplation, the soul learns to see beyond appearance, to recognize intelligible form, and ultimately to turn inward toward its own source. The sculptor’s act of removing what obstructs form becomes a model for philosophical purification and inner transformation. The essay thus proposes an aesthetics of disappearance: beauty accomplishes its function when the visible object becomes transparent to the invisible. In Plotinus, aesthetic contemplation reaches its fulfilment not in the possession of beauty, but in the capacity to pass beyond it, from form to the source of form, and from vision toward transcendence.
