ENGINEERING EDUCATION IN THE AGE OF AI Artificial intelligence is reshaping how engineers learn, how educators teach, how universities operate, and how professionals develop throughout their careers. Engineering Education in the Age of AI examines this transformation and explores what engineering education must become to remain relevant in an increasingly AI-driven world. Drawing on an extensive review of more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and evidence from engineering education and workforce development across different disciplines, educational levels, and global contexts, this book brings together research evidence, theoretical perspectives, practical approaches, and emerging trends. The book explores three interconnected dimensions of engineering education. First, it examines the integration of AI into higher education, including curriculum transformation, personalized learning, intelligent tutoring systems, virtual laboratories, generative AI, adaptive learning, assessment, and human–AI collaboration. Second, it focuses on learning activities that develop the capabilities engineers need in the AI era, including project-based, problem-based, challenge-based, inquiry-based, collaborative, laboratory, simulation, and real-world learning. Third, it addresses what happens beyond graduation, examining lifelong learning, upskilling, reskilling, continuing engineering education, professional development, competency-based development, workforce readiness, and emerging career pathways. The book also addresses the challenges accompanying AI integration, including infrastructure limitations, faculty AI literacy, ethical considerations, algorithmic bias, data privacy and security, resistance to change, skills gaps, and equitable access. At its core, the book argues that preparing engineers for the AI era requires more than technological competence.
