Description

Digital financial platforms, including cryptocurrencies, blockchain-based assets, and decentralized financial systems, have transformed how individuals access and engage with financial markets. While these technologies are often presented as tools for democratizing finance, questions remain regarding whether increased accessibility translates into more equitable participation. This study examines the extent to which digital finance promotes financial inclusion and investigates how socioeconomic background, financial knowledge, prior exposure to investing, and perceived risk influence individuals participation in emerging financial markets. Using survey data collected from 123 participants across six continents, this research analyzes investment experiences, barriers to participation, and perceptions of digital assets. The findings suggest that digital platforms have reduced traditional barriers to market entry by increasing convenience, lowering transaction costs, and expanding access to investment opportunities. However, accessibility alone does not guarantee equal participation or wealth-building outcomes. Financial constraints, limited investment knowledge, lack of prior exposure, and concerns regarding financial risk remain significant barriers influencing whether individuals engage with digital financial systems. The study concludes that digital finance has contributed to a partial democratization of financial markets: it has expanded opportunities for participation, but equitable outcomes remain dependent on individuals’ financial capabilities, resources, and confidence in navigating these technologies.
