Description

The idea of a Virtual Univ. was put before the former Education Minister of the Govt. of Bougainville: Hon'ble Emmanuel-Carlos Kaetavara for his country. Appreciating it, he made strenuous efforts at various Govt. agencies for the necessary permission. The Dept. of Higher Education, Science & Technology of PNG Govt. advised him to come up with detailed Course Outlines of different Programmes. Proposing the name as Melanesian Virtual Univ. at Baba (in his own Parliamentary Constituency of Bougainville), he requested me to prepare detailed Course Outlines for each Programme. I worked hard and prepared the Courses for 21 Graduate (Hons.) Courses for the core subjects of both Arts & Science streams and few job-oriented courses: Accountancy, B.Ed., Journalism, and Law. A P-G Course in Maths. was also planned. The courses specifically intend to raise students‘ sensitivity to finding solutions for environment and development problems. It is aimed to enhance capacities of stdts. to understand the potential and the limits of the environment, and foster ethical awareness, values and attitudes. This volume consists of 11 chapters of which the 1st one deals with 2-year B.Ed. Program, the last 2 chapters present Law and 2-year Maths. (P-G) Programs. Rest of the chapters detail the courses of 8 science subjects: Botany,  Chem., Comp. Sci., Home Sci., Maths., Phys., Stats. & Zoology for B.Sc. (Hons.) Programs of 4 years' duration, i.e. 8 semesters and 4 courses are to be offered in every semester. The 1st year of all science Programs consists of Foundation Courses: Academic Skills, General English, Religious Studies, Technical English, Basic Courses on Computers, Maths. and Stats. (for some Programs). It also includes few interdisciplinary courses: Environmental Science, General Science, Scientific Communication for Science subjects. The Law Programme also includes courses on Melanesian Geography, Melanesian History, Basic Philosophy and (local language) Tok Pisin. Abbreviations used in the text are stretched at the end.
