Latin American integration process is as old as the European experiment, although without reaching the institutional structure and the complexity of a supranational organization as the one established in Western Europe, from the European Common Market (1958) toward the European Union (Maastricht, 1993). Its most successful endeavor presents itself as an intergovernmental structure, in the form of a customs union (in the model of the old Benelux), even though it is called the Common Market of the South (Mercosur). This book follows the various stages of this experiment, with a comparative approach to the European one. The analysis places the Latin American regional integration in the context of the multilateral trade system and in the framework of main trends in the international trade flows.
