Description

Before artificial intelligence could answer our questions, humanity had to build ways to remember, count, cooperate, and govern. The Systems We Built traces that journey—from oral traditions and clay tablets to money, law, institutions, machines, and digital networks. Across civilizations, it explores how people preserved knowledge, organized resources, exercised power, and made cooperation possible beyond the limits of personal trust. These systems emerged through invention and exchange, but also through conflict, conquest, and exclusion. Each extended human capability while shaping whose knowledge counted, who benefited, and who carried the cost. Connecting historical examples with contemporary questions, Dr. Mansi S. Rai examines how earlier choices continue to influence the institutions and technologies we rely on today. Artificial intelligence becomes the latest chapter in a much longer story: humanity’s effort to place memory, judgment, and action into systems that outlive their creators. For readers curious about history, institutions, and technology, this book asks a question that belongs to all of us: What kind of world are we building into the systems we leave behind?   With editorial contributions by Captain Christopher Thomas Cotton.
