Discovering the young Velázquez… Until the discovery of The Education of the Virgin in 2010 (Yale University, United States), no oil paintings from this early period were known. I present here a Saint John the Evangelist on the Island of Patmos, for which a thorough analysis of the ground layer and the pigments employed has been carried out using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry and Raman spectroscopy. Owing to its provenance, chronology, technique, chemical composition, and subject matter, this painting constitutes a strong candidate for attribution to the young Velázquez. A genious was growing.
