Description

Architectures of Hubris develops a comparative theory of constructed realities through three disparate cases: an academic prestige system represented in the dossier by Cypress International Institute and Tuweh Prince Gadama; the scientific isolation of António Gião; and the Spanish colonial representation of Equatorial Guinea through Hermic Films. The original dossier calls these the Farce, the Tragedy and the Hubris of Empire. This edition retains those names as the architecture of the source while adding a more rigorous philosophy of evidence. The central claim is deliberately structural rather than moral. The three cases are not equivalent institutions, and their consequences are not equivalent. The first concerns academic authority and the possibility that bureaucratic signs may become substitutes for institutional substance. The second concerns the relation between individual originality and collective scientific criticism. The third concerns the colonial production of images, categories and narratives through which imperial power made itself appear natural. The theoretical vocabulary is drawn from Weber's sociology of authority; Bourdieu's account of symbolic capital and fields; Merton's norms of science; Popper, Kuhn and Lakatos on criticism, paradigms and research programmes; Latour on networks of scientific credibility; Foucault on discourse and institutional power; Said and Fabian on colonial representation and temporal distance; Pratt on the contact zone; and Scott on legibility. These thinkers are not used as ornaments. Each illuminates a mechanism visible in at least one exhibit. The final proposition is that authority becomes fragile when its mechanisms of validation turn inward. A system can be constructed and still be real. Degrees, scientific theories and states are all socially constructed. The problem begins when the signs that represent reality become more authoritative than the external processes that should correct them. The wall is built when the representation can no longer be effectively contradicted by the world it claims to describe.
