Born in Indiana, USA, in 1947. Did university physics at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Dropped out of graduate school twice, then bummed around India. Ended up much later doing graduate school in West Berlin, where he became familiar with the old German masters of neuroanatomy. After 10 years of study and work (human auditory cortex and speech perception) in West Berlin married an Australian in Cologne and moved there to complete medical school. After med school, a couple of years as a resident at Cologne University Hospital, then the family moved to Melbourne, far from the radioactivity from Chernobyl, in 1988. About 20 years of research (Bionic Ear) and teaching (IT, Health Informatics) in Melbourne, then about 10 years of teaching (IT, Health Informatics, Bioinformatics) in Kuching (East Malaysia) and Melaka (West Malaysia). Retired first in 2015, then again in 2018.
