When diabetes mellitus is diagnosed, peripheral neuropathy is present in about 20 % of cases. As diabetes mellitus is a progressive disease, peripheral neuropathy rate is considered to increase with diabetes mellitus chronicity. It's considered that about 60 % of diabetes mellitus patients already have peripheral neuropathy. When 5 years passed from diabetes mellitus diagnosis about 30 % of patients have diabetic neuropathy. DPN is considered as one of the most critical complications of diabetes mellitus that lasts a long life. Not only that, but also it leads to many problems such as severe neuropathic pain and foot ulcers, which can extend to foot amputation if not treated early. Unfortunately, DPN may be diagnosed late, which reduces the chances of treatment. DPN may be diagnosed when a foot ulcer occurs.
